Young skates to silver in Bradford

Ice queen: Young and her team-mates continued to impress at the IJS Open

Shazaday Young and her ice Sheffield Skating Academy team-mates continued their good form at yesterday’s Bradford IJS Open in Yorkshire.

The synchronised ice-skating team produced an impressive display that earned them a trip to the podium after securing the silver medal at the competition.

“I’m so happy and excited,” Young, who attends Westfield Sports College, said. “It’s hard to explain the feeling.”

Young and her team-mates greatly impressed at January’s British Championships in Nottingham, where they placed fifth before going one better with a fourth-place finish at last month’s Trophy D’ecosse and Scottish Championships in Dumfries.

Synchronised skating is a fast-growing discipline of figure skating where between eight and 20 skaters skate on ice as a team, moving as one flowing unit at high speeds.

The sport uses the same judging system as singles, pairs and ice dancing, and is judged primarily on teamwork, precision, speed, difficulty and performance.

Young, who hopes to reach the Olympics in the future, is scheduled to compete at this month’s Fourth Kempen Trophy in Belgium.

“Next time it’s fight for gold,” she said.
