Social Club thrash ten-man Wolves
Young Men’s Social Club rolled over Wolves without hardly breaking a sweat in a 5-1 win in the First Division at Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.
The visiting side stamped their authority on the match late in the first half with goals from Saki Tuzo, Clay Darrell and Robert Rawlings inside of nine minutes.
Substitute Cory Burgess and Darrell added to Social Club’s lead after the break while substitute Raymond Butterfield grabbed a consolation for Wolves, who were reduced to ten men in the 87th minute after Shacoi Daniels, the midfielder, who was shown a straight red for foul and abusive language towards referee Tracey Adams.
Social Club were slow shifting through the gears but after getting up to speed were denied by the referee assistant’s flag for offside after Tuzo had the ball in the back of the net. Darrell also failed to convert on a breakaway as the visiting side continued to knock on the door.
After absorbing enormous pressure, Wolves began to carve out space and create chances for themselves in the attacking third and threatened to break the ice when Steven Bremar, the lone striker, was sent clear by Lamelle Paynter’s free kick. Bremar’s attempted pull back was blocked by Reid Trott, the Social Club goalkeeper, who then pushed the striker’s second attempt around the post for a corner.
Social Club suffered a setback in the twelfth minute when Kelvon Butterfield, the midfielder, limped off with a knee injury and was replaced by Burgess.
Wolves threatened again with Trott saving Paynter’s header and Ryan Swan, the right back, just failing to get his head to Paynter’s inviting free kick.
Social Club finally broke their opponents down when Darrell, the league’s top scorer with 18 goals, dispossessed Swan on the edge of the box and squared the ball to the onrushing Tuzo, who made no mistake from close range.
Less than a minute later Tuzo returned the favour, finding Darrell with a perfect through ball which the midfielder drilled into the far post, leaving Koeshon Smith, the Wolves goalkeeper, no chance.
Rawlings made it 3-0 with the goal of the game. The midfielder gained possession deep in Wolves’ half on the right side and rode at least two tackles before smashing the ball into the roof of the net from an angle.
Social Club continued to turn the screws after the break, with Burgess getting in on the scoring act with a back-heel while standing in what appeared to be an offside position.
Wolves finally opened their account when Butterfield got on the end of Kyle Brangman’s diagonal cross and fired past Trott, who was left exposed by a flat-footed defence.
Social Club were denied what appeared to be a clear cut penalty after a tackle on Darrell in the box with Wolves down a man after Anthony Francis, the left back, was being treated on the sidelines for cramp.
However, Wolves would not be as fortunate moments later when Darrell was again brought down in the box. After dusting himself off, Darrell smashed the ball past Bremar, who replaced Smith between the posts to round off the scoring with his second of the match.
Wolves’ woes were further compounded when Daniels lost his cool just minutes from the end and received his marching orders after verbally abusing the referee.
n Last-placed Ireland Rangers snapped a nine-game losing streak stretching back to last November when they held Bermuda Athletic Association, the First Division Shield holders, to a 2-2 draw at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday night.
Jiriko Powell gave the home side the lead in the fifteenth minute before BAA’s Morricko Iris levelled the scores three minutes before half-time.
Jahkari Furbert gave the visiting side the lead for the first time in the match when he converted in the 73rd minute only for their home side to equalise ten minutes from the end through Daneiro Tacklyn.
n X-Roads got back to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Paget Lions at Southampton Oval yesterday.
Jorge Sanchez, Khomeini Talbot and Kijaun Wilkinson were all on target for the visiting side who snapped a two-game losing skid. Jahniya Richardson replied for Paget who had Kyhon Smith sent off in the 89th minute for serious foul play.
X-Roads broke the deadlock in the first minute of the match through a goal from Sanchez before Paget hit back in the 51st minute through Richardson.
Talbot put X-Roads back in front for good in the 57th minute before Wilkinson put the match further beyond Paget’s reach three minutes later.
Paget played the final minute a man down after Smith was sent off for a reckless challenge.
