Archers claim silver in Gotland
Bernard Wade III and Tiffany Slaton claimed the silver medal in the mixed recurve head-to-head team knockout competition at the NatWest Island Games in Gotland, Sweden, yesterday.
The Bermudian pair lost 6-0 to Guernsey in the final, having beat Aland 6-0 in the quarter-finals and Jersey 6-0 in the semi-finals.
In the Men’s 720 Recurve basic round, Wade III placed seventh and Robert O’Connor twelfth, while Slaton came eleventh in the women’s competition.
Bermuda’s ladies golf team are third in the team event. Katrin Burnie, Linda Down, Elizabeth Parsons and Tariqah Walikraam shot a combined total of 514 in the opening round, trailing Isle of Wight, 508, and Gotland, 486.
After round one of the ladies individual golf final, Parsons is eighth, Walikraam tenth, Burnie thirteenth and Down 27th.
In athletics, Gayle Lindsey finished seventh in the women’s 1,500 metres in a time of 4min 47.05sec. Anna Tait, of Orkney, won the race in 4:24.15
Gavin Manders, the island’s No 1 tennis player, beat Sion Myers, of Ynys Mon 6-1, 6-4, in the men’s singles round of 32, while Sam Butler lost 6-2, 2-6, 0-1 to Menorca’s Josep Coll Llopis. David Thomas was also in action, against Saaremaa’s Rauno Gull, with the Bermudian leading 6-3, 3-1 when his opponent retired injured.
Deshi Smith and Adam Kirk both competed in the men’s individual mountain bike cross-country final, with Kirk coming 25th and Smith placing 29th.
The men’s beach volleyball team of Ian Bucci and Kazimierz Orlowki lost 21-10, 21-9 to Jersey’s Berislav Bobus and Ruben Vieri before going down 21-18, 17-21, 13-15 to Cayman Islands’ Nathan Dack and Casey Santamaria in the group stage.
Bermuda’s women’s volleyball team suffered a five-set defeat to Menorca in the group stage, losing 19-25, 25-18, 10-25, 25-21, 16-18. Meanwhile, the men’s volleyball team lost a pair of group games against Gotland, 16-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-14, 10-15, and Saaremaa 25-15, 25-14, 25-21.
Bermuda won seven medals in Gotland on Monday, including five in gymnastics.
Chantae Wilson picked up a silver in the women’s individual beam and a bronze in the individual floor. Anna Francoeur and Gianna Webbe finished in joint-second place in the individual vault, both picking up silvers. The trio also won silver in the team floor and vault.
Bermuda’s other medal-winners were Taahira Butterfield, who won silver in the women’s 100 metres, while the men’s tennis team picked up bronze.
