McCallan makes remarkable return
Kim McCallan will complete a courageous comeback when she competes for the first time in over a year in tomorrow’s Spanish Point National Grand Prix Race.
The Bermuda Power Boat Association commodore’s racing career was put on hold after she suffered multiple injuries when the catamaran she was racing in as co-pilot barrel-rolled while rounding Five Star Island during the 2016 Rubis Around the Island Power Boat Race.
McCallan was treated for a broken elbow, a concussion, a cut above her eye that required stitches as well as bruising, which she suffered after being thrown from the 21-foot boat.
There had been doubts whether the mother of one would return to the local powerboat racing circuit in the aftermath of her mishap.
However, those doubts have been laid to rest as McCallan is scheduled to compete with Kenny Maybury aboard the latter’s 21-foot Skater during tomorrow’s race.
Asked does she have any pre-race butterflies, McCallan said: “I was nervous as heck, but I think I am ready. I will be in a D class boat, and not the same one, so it’s a totally different boat.
“I am not sure if the owner of the boat will let me drive, so I will go in as co-pilot.”
The event will consist of two races with competitors among four classes (A, B, D and S) completing laps on a triangular course located off of Spanish Point.
“They will be laps this time and not timed as our other races have been,” McCallan said.
“The race will start at 1pm. The drivers’ meeting is at 12pm and, of course, the race will go on weather permitting.”
Also competing are two teams that have dominated the racing scene this season.
Shaki Easton and rookie co-pilot/owner Errin Butterfield have won every race in the A class while rookie pilot Andrew Cottingham and co-pilot Henry Talbot have done the same in the D class.
Easton and Butterfield won class honours and were the first boat to complete this month’s Rubis Around the Island Power Boat Race, with Cottingham, the chief mechanic and a sponsor of Butterfield’s boat, and Talbot claiming D class honours.
