Resendes puts in a repeat performance
Ryan Resendes overcame a setback to make it two wins on the trot at Sunday’s Spanish Point Grand Prix Race.
Resendes won B class honours with co-pilot Brian Correia, despite losing considerable ground on the leader early in the race after his engine cowling came loose.
“We were in second at the time and I looked back and saw the engine cowling was loose so we stopped and pulled it off and put it in the boat and by that time we were down half a lap from first place,” Resendes explained. “We kept running without my engine cowling and managed to catch everybody up and pass them probably two or three laps before the end.
“It was choppy, but this boat loves it. I was very happy with the conditions. It was probably like a one to two-foot chop, which is what this boat is designed for. It’s not designed for calm waters and once it gets in the chop it settles right out and just ploughs through.”
Tehan Fox and Michael Madeiros finished second, with Jody Carreiro and Tony Carreiro bringing up the rear among the trio of B class entries.
Resendes’ impressive come-from-behind victory followed fresh on the heels of his triumph in the Rubis Around the Island Race. He captured class honours in the annual 54-mile race with rookie co-pilot Josh Allen who has since returned to study abroad and did not race on Sunday.
Taking Allen’s place in the cockpit was Correia, who was equal to the task.
“My original co-pilot went back to school so I had to get a substitute,” Resendes said. “We only had half an hour of practice and during the race he was learning how to use the trim.
“He got it down within three laps and after that it was game over.”
Resendes is competing in a second-hand 21ft Marshan he purchased four days before the Around the Island Race and says his immediate success in the boat has surpassed his expectations.
“I was not expecting this at all,” he said. “I was expecting to get out and have some fun and place decent, but not come and win races for sure.
“It’s definitely unexpected but hard work pays off.”
Claiming A class honours on Sunday were Shaki Easton and co-pilot owner Errin Butterfield, who have won every race they have entered this season.
D class was won by unbeaten duo Andrew Cottingham and co-pilot Henry Talbot, who have also dominated their class this campaign.
Easton and Butterfield won Rubis Around the Island Race A class honours and were the first to finish the 54-mile racecourse, while Cottingham and Talbot won their class at the first time of asking.
