Bermuda praised for being a ‘solid team’
The recent Bermuda Ball Hockey Classic was described as “awesome” by visiting player Carlos Bonanca, even though his Boston side lost to Bermuda in the final at Pembroke Community Club last Sunday.
Cam Poland scored twice as the home team beat the Americans 4-2 on a rainy Sunday morning. Rob Bailey opened the scoring for Bermuda in the first period, with Jeff Loper providing the assist, before Dominic Martel equalised, helped by Jordan Senecal.
Poland scored his first goal in the second period, with John Talbot and Chris Coleman assisting, with James Bloxson providing a second leveller for Boston — SP Bilodeau and Davbe Provost assists.
However, the local boys wrapped things up later in the period, with Poland scoring his second, Talbot assisting, and Loper adding the fourth off Coleman’s assist.
The result did not dampen Bonanca’s experience too much, however.
“The event was good,” he said. “It was hockey and if you love hockey you’re going to love the event.”
He also had plenty of nice things to say about the island.
“I’m going to keep it PG, but Bermuda was effing awesome! The sights, the people,” he added. “It’s a bit pricey, but beautiful.
“We played well. They had the advantage in the rain, they took our speed away so it was advantage to the home team.
“Bermuda played all right. They’re a solid team; you’ve got to move the ball on them. They don’t like to run, they like to stand still.
“The problem was we tried to move the ball, but it was too fast and the surface was pretty bad.”
The event was a forerunner to the International Street & Ball Hockey Federation Masters, which take place in Bermuda next September.
