James: we will learn from our mistakes
Vanessa James has put the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the podium at the European Championships behind her and set her sights on next month’s Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang, South Korea.
James and Morgan Cipres, who compete for France, were firmly on course for a second straight medal in Moscow last week after top scoring in the short programme at the Megasport Sport Palace.
However, all their hard work came undone as a series of errors in the free skate on the final day triggered a slide which ultimately saw them pipped for bronze by one hundredth of a point.
James landed a quadruple throw Salchow, but cut short a toeloop, while two lifts were shaky in the free skate discipline.
Rather than dwell on what might have been, James said she and her partner will “learn from our mistakes” and believes they can still be a “threat” at the Winter Games, which commence on February 8.
“We’ve beaten the Russians in the short, we’ve beaten the Germans in the long,” James told The Associated Press. “We’ve beaten everyone a little bit, differently, at different times. Now we just have to get it all together at one point, and I’m hoping that will be at the Olympics.”
James will be making her third appearance at the Games in Pyeonchang, having competed in Vancouver in 2010, when she finished fourteenth with Yannick Bonheur, and at the 2014 Games in Sochi, where she and Cipres placed tenth.
James and Cipres have competed together since 2010, during which time they have also racked up five French national titles and won medals in the Grand Prix and Challenger Series events.
They became the first French pair to win a medal at the European Championships in 14 years after claiming bronze at last year’s event in the Czech Republic.
Before becoming a French citizen, James, who is also the cousin of Bermudian tennis player Tyler Smith, was the 2006 British national champion in singles and in 2007 won the silver medal.
She was born in Ontario, Canada and lived in Bermuda until aged 10 when she moved to the United States with her family. James’s twin sister, Melyssa, is also a figure skater.
Representing Bermuda at next month’s Winter Olympics will be cross-country skier Tucker Murphy, who, like James, is making his third appearance at the Games.
