Hayward wins on debut in boccia event

Omar Hayward picked up a win for Bermuda on day one of the BISFed World Boccia Championship in Liverpool yesterday.

Hayward, making his debut in the competition, beat Subin Tipmanee, of Thailand, 5-2 in the BC1 division.

Also in action yesterday was Steve Wilson in the BC4 division, who lost 4-1 to Eliseu dos Santos, of Brazil, and 6-1 to David Komar, of Croatia.

Meanwhile in the BC2 division Yushae DeSilva-Andrade lost 8-0 to Raul Marti, of Spain.

The local trio will play at least three games each today.

There are 32 players in each division, with eight pools of four. The top two finishers in each pool will advance to the finals.

About 190 players from 33 countries are playing at the event at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool.

Athletes are competing for world titles, as well as ranking points for the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2020.
