Barnes in position for podium finishes

Top three: Scott Barnes, right, drapped in the Bermuda flag, was delighted with his third-place finish at the Thor Industries Elkhart Riverwalk Grand Prix in Indiana

Scott Barnes is targeting podium finishes in both of his classes in the Triple Crown of Karting.

Barnes won the shifter class at the recent Thor Industries Elkhart Riverwalk Grand Prix in Indiana to leave him leading the drivers’ standings with one race remaining — the Rock Island Grand Prix in Illinois on September 1 and 2.

The 33-year-old is third in the L206 — his thirteenth place in Indiana did not count towards his points total — and believes that he can still win both classes.

“I can potentially finish in the top three in both of my classes,” Barnes said. “I’ll be shooting to win both of them, though.”

The Triple Crown consists of Quincy Grand Prix in Illinois, the Thor Industries Elkhart Riverwalk Grand Prix and the Rock Island Grand Prix. The overall champion will be decided by combined points earned at all three races.

Barnes, the former Bermuda Karting Club president, said he was delighted with his podium in the shifters in Indiana.

“Me and the guy in fourth had a great battle the whole race,” he said. “We were bumper to bumper throughout; he would pass me one corner and I would pass him the next.

“Anytime I can get a podium, I’m pretty happy with that.”

Barnes suffered misfortune in the L206 after he spun out trying to avoid a two-kart collision.

“I was running in seventh the whole race and with two laps to go the two guys in front of me went sideways and almost spun,” he said. “I hit the breaks to avoid them and ended up spinning out myself. I was a little disappointed but luckily this race didn’t count to the Triple Crown. It didn’t hurt my points.”
