Hopkins 83rd in regional race

Strong showing: Kaden Hopkins, far left, is part of the Caribbean team at the Vuelta Independencia Nacional in Dominican Republic

Kaden Hopkins is in 83rd position after four stages of the Vuelta Independencia Nacional in Dominican Republic.

The Bermuda cyclist, who is representing a Caribbean select team, is lining up against some of the best cyclists from Central and South America.

Hopkins’s team includes riders from Puerto Rico, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba and St Vincent.

“The third stage [on Wednesday] was a pretty hectic,” he said. “I was pretty competitive until the last lap when I realised none of my team-mates were with me; I eased off a bit.

“There was a big crash [yesterday, stage four] and a lot of the ambulances had to take riders to hospital. The race got neutralised for the last 20K because it’s a UCI rule that you can’t race without medical services there.”

The seven-stage race, a Union Cycliste Internationale 2.2 Level competition, continues today and finishes on Sunday.
