Hardknockz suffer first loss
Angels took Hardknockz down a peg by handing them a loss for the first time this season in Softball Bermuda’s Women’s Division.
Hardknockz left Sarah Robinson (4-5), the tying run, stranded at third base as they mounted a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh.
Angels started slowly, only scoring one run in the first three innings before the bats came alive as the team piled up 14 runs over the next three frames. Keisha Eve (2-3) hit a home run, and Rickelle Smith (1-3) knocked in four runs as Angels are now tied atop of the division.
The other women’s game saw PHC Zebras take a comfortable mercy victory over Outback Skylights.
In the A Division, Blue Wahoos and Sea venture remain a perfect 5-0 after both posted wins this week. Wahoos slipped past Paraquet Flyers 9-8 while Sea Venture doubled up Chubb Lings 16-8. Sea Venture leads the league in defence having only surrendered 29 runs in five contests. Wahoos had to score eight times in the last two innings to remain unbeaten. Jeff Looper (2-3) delivered the winning hit Matt Katsch, and Scott Macgillvray were both 4-5 in the win. Steve O’Flynn (2-3) hit a grand slam for Paraquet.
Elsewhere in the A Division, Hakuna Matata Charters almost picked up their first win of the year but succumbed to X-Bats 22-21; and Docksiders shut down Platano Power 12-7.
In the B Division, Team Smokey edged the Raggamuffins 24-23, and FIU Scared Hitless beat the Beach Bums 20-9. Raggamuffins made a furious fightback scoring 12 times in the last inning but left the bases loaded as they fell just short.
Dandre Outerbridge (2-5), Mark Steede (2-5), and Jared Whitecross (2-3) all homered in the loss. Gerald Simons (4-5) had a pair of homers to lead the way for Team Smokey as team-mates OJ Barnett and Ivan Dyer were both 4-6 at the top of the order.
Super Express holstered the shooters in an 18-13 triumph in the C Division. The other C Division match saw Buffaloes beat Five O’s 28-3. Buffaloes bremain undefeated.
Athene Warriors took a pair from Best Shipping in a rare doubleheader. The two sides had to finish a game from earlier in the season, and Athene came from behind to take the first contest 14-13, then left no doubt by winning the second 24-12. It was an excellent week for Athene as it also beat PWC 20-12.
In the PWC match, Adam Birch, Shawn Furlong, and Sam Zhou were all 4-5 with Donny Moniz and Kate Furlong driving in five and four runs respectively. Ryan Davies (4-4) and Mitch Mycock (3-3) were perfect at the plate for PWC.
