Docksiders upset X-Bats
The first round of the softball play-offs involved several first-round upsets.
A Paulo Arruda grand slam in extra innings led Docksiders to a 16-12 victory over favoured X-Bats in an A Division contest.
Both teams were tied at 11 after seven innings with Shawn Furlong (5-5) doing much of the damage for Dockies, while Dustin Luck was the big man for X-Bats in going 3-4 with 4 RBI.
Mark James was 3-4 with four RBI and a homer for X-Bats while Docksiders’ coach Richard Madeiros also had a good night in going 3-5 with three RBIs and a homer.
Ragamuffins came from behind to beat higher seed FIU Scared Hitless 19-12 in a B Division match. Steve Wallace (4-4) smacked two homers and drove in seven to spark ‘Muffins to the triumph.
Team-mate Brent Giannone aided in going 3-5 from the lead-off spot. FIU’s Chris Pitcher (2-4, HR, 3 RBI) and Troy pitcher (3-4) did well from the middle of the line-up.
Beach Bums pulled off a surprise in beating top seed Team Smokey 18-14. Dylan Desilva (4-5) and Jeff Olson (3-5) both had good turns at the plate for the Bums, but it was Katie Masters (2-5) who led the team with 4 RBI. Jacinto Brownie, Lateef Trott (5 RBI), and Sarah Robinson all had three hits in the losing cause for FIU.
The first and second place teams in the C Division, Buffaloes and Super Express both swept their series. Buffaloes doubled up Shooters 18-9, then finished them off 25-13. In the second game for Buffaloes, Josh Bang was 5-5 with a homer and five RBI while team-mate Johnny Singleton homered and plated six.
Super Express locked up Five O’s 19-4, before beating them by a nearly identical 20-4.
In the top half of the women’s bracket Angels had little difficulty in flying past the Outback Skylights 21-3.
Third seed PHC Zebras pulled off an upset in defeating last year’s champions Hardknockz 14-6, but the series was levelled when they pummeled PHC 26-6.
In the Corporate Division, KPMG and Athene Warriors are tied at one game apiece after the Warriors defaulted the second game.
Athene, the regular season champs, beat KPMG 15-6 in the opening match. PWC dropped two to Best Shipping and are eliminated after defaulting their second game. Best won the opener 15-6.
