Peter Dunne, the Bermuda Bicycle Association president, has hailed the island’s phenomenal display competing at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Guyana at the weekend.

Bermuda’s four-member team comprising of Nicholas Narraway, Alexander Miller, Liam Flannery and Nazarai Fox earned five medals to add to the island’s already impressive track record at the annual championships.

Miller and Flannery captured the gold and bronze medals in the boys 15-16 age group and Narraway silver in the boys 17-18 age group competing in the time-trial on Saturday.

“All three gave it 100 per cent and they got amazing results,” Dunne said.

It is the second straight year that an island cyclist has won the boys 15-16 time-trial title as Narraway was victorious at that level last year, when Bermuda hosted the annual championships.

Bermuda’s medal haul increased after Miller took the silver medal and Narraway the bronze competing in their respective age brackets during yesterday’s road race, also held in Bartica.

Miller broke away from the peloton with two other riders and ultimately crossed the line in second with team-mates Fox and Flannery finishing seventh and eighth.

Narraway, the sole survivor from Bermuda’s team that won every title up for grabs at the previous event, finished third competing alone among the older boys division.

“Returning to Bermuda with five of the twelve medals available this weekend has demonstrated the local cycling programme is one of the best in the region,” Dunne added.

“We have been developing as a junior cycling force for the last twelve years.

“The last few have been the culmination of the efforts we began with Dominique Mayho and through Daniel Oately, Gabby Arnold, Alyssa Rowse, Matt and Kaden and now a new generation.

“We have good seeds planted for the future and expect that they will be capable of continuing the high-performance results in the Caribbean.
