Whaley set to showcase talents during inaugural USFL season

Devwah Whaley

Devwah Whaley is looking forward to showcasing his talents during the inaugural United States Football League season.

The Bermudian running back was selected by the Houston Gambler as the 39th pick in the fifth round of the league’s draft.

“All God’s plan. Let’s work,” Whaley posted on Twitter.

The fledgeling league consists of eight teams, which also includes Michigan Panthers, Tampa Bay Bandits, Philadelphia Stars, Birmingham Stallions, New Jersey Generals, Pittsburgh Maulers and New Orleans Breakers.

The 12-week long season begins on April 16 and includes the play-offs to be held in June.

All regular-season games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama and post season games in Canton, Ohio.

The USFL kicked off its inaugural season with a two-day draft last month, which was followed by a supplemental draft this month, when Whaley’s services were secured by the Houston Gamblers.

All eight teams feature Division I college players from powerhouses such as Georgia and Ohio State, as well as NFL teams Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos.

Among the familiar names are quarterback Paxton Lynch, who was drafted in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, and defensive end Freedom Akinmoladun, the 2015 Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection who was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2019.
