Hurricane Awareness Week launched
The Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) yesterday launched the Hurricane Awareness Week in the build-up to the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season.National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief said: “We must never forget the tragedy of Hurricane Fabian in 2003, and should learn from our experiences to ensure that lives are protected, as we also focus on the security of property and livelihoods.“We cannot prevent the approach or onset of hurricanes, but we can become more resilient by reducing our impacts by decreasing vulnerability and raising preparedness against this potentially deadly hazard.”Last week the EMO met in order to be briefed on agencies preparedness and plans for the hurricane season, which will begin on June 1. According to AccuWeather reports, the 2011 season is predicted to be busier than average, with 15 named storms and eight hurricanes, three of which are predicted to be major storms.A spokeswoman for the EMO said yesterday: “In light of last year’s enhanced Atlantic hurricane activity and the specific impact of Hurricane Igor, it is important to continue the successes in disaster preparedness that Bermuda already achieves.”The Bermuda Weather Service has prepared a series of Public Service Announcements, which can be viewed at their website, giving information about planning for hurricanes and hurricane threat criteria.Useful websites: www.emobermuda.com, www.weather.bm, www.nhc.noaa.gov.
