A jump rope team is dazzling the world with their skills and scenes of Bermuda.

The three-minute video, by Rockfire Productions, has had 800 views since it debuted on internet site Vimeo this week.

Island Hopping shows the Bermy Bouncers, a competitive jump rope group, skipping in various parts of the Island and is set to Heart Skips a Beat, by Olly Murs.

“I really wanted to highlight the sport of jump rope and also the hard work that the children on the team are doing,” said Sionna Barton, who runs Bermy Bouncers as an arm of the Bermuda Heart Foundation’s Jump 2b Fit programme.

Miss Barton also wanted to show off Bermuda’s beauty. Her hope is that her efforts will be enough to bring an international jump rope summit to the Island. A hot topic is whether jumping rope should become an Olympic sport.

“Inclusion in the Olympics is what everyone in the competitive jump rope world is aiming for,” Miss Barton said.

“The first step is bringing the world together. I sent a copy of the video to Shaun Hamilton, the chairperson of the World Jump Rope Federation [the group that would organise such a summit].”

The Federation is very interested in how well Jump 2b Fit has done in Bermuda since it was started in 2010, she said.

“The first year Jump 2b Fit held a jump rope workshop for students, 75 students turned up at Somersfield Academy,” said Miss Barton.

“Five years later, 1,000 students turned up, many unregistered.

“We had them in the gym at Somersfield, we had them in the common room, we had them in the hallways.

“There wasn’t a space at Somersfield that didn’t have a kid holding a jump rope. In some ways we were the victims of our own success.”

Registration for a workshop in March will be limited, she said.

The Bermy Bouncers won several competitions at the World Jump Rope Championships in Florida last year.

Island Hopping was made on a very hot day last June. Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, Horseshoe Bay and Hamilton are among the many places shown. Miss Barton jumped in high heels.

“[It’s] something I wouldn’t normally recommend,” she said. “But it was fun.”

Adrian Kawaley Lathan of Rockfire Productions said one of the company’s goals was to assist charities in Bermuda. He made the video along with Khalilah Robinson and Lamone Woods of Bermuda’s Channel 82.

“I was really happy to have such a professional crew working under me,” he said. “As a director I could focus on working with the children.

“Even Hollywood-level directors find it challenging working with children. You have to have a lot of patience and have to be able to communicate with them well. These children are fantastic.”

He hoped it would inspire similar projects.

“The response has been really positive,” he said. “People are really excited about it, and super excited for the children. It is great that people overseas will be seeing how beautiful Bermuda is.”

The film was sponsored by Argus Insurance and Flying Colours.

Jump 2b Fit will hold a fundraiser at LifeThyme CrossFit on Dundonald Street on February 21.

Jump rope workshops for students will be held at Somersfield Academy on March 5 and 6. Students can register at their own schools.

A community workshop takes place March 7, also at Somersfield. No registration is required. For more information Jump 2b Fit Bermuda on Facebook.
