CFAs offer financial literacy course

CFA Society Bermuda has announced that the next financial literacy series, offered in partnership with the Bermuda College PACE programme, is to begin on September 28.

The series will run from 6pm until 8pm on four consecutive Wednesday evenings.

It will be delivered online using the College’s Zoom platform.

Robin Masters, speaking on behalf of CFA Society Bermuda, said: “We want to support people towards greater financial health. There seems to be an assumption that people just become financially literate, yet there is little to no formal schooling that addresses the topic.

“While it is partly learnt from experience there is an education component, and this course is designed to give people that basic knowledge and level of understanding to strengthen their financial capability.

“We do that by providing unbiased, factual information combined with discussions, where we create conversations around money and share our experiences with each other.”

The CFA Society said the instructors are a diverse group of volunteers who believe that the importance of financial literacy cannot be understated.

All instructors are CFA charter holders who work in the financial services industry and have significant knowledge in all the areas that the course covers.

Miguel Da Ponte, a course instructor and president of CFA Society Bermuda, said: “I teach this course, because as money becomes less tangible, financial literacy becomes more important. Cash is used less and less, we tap and pay for things, and I think it then becomes much easier to lose track of your finances.

“Hopefully by the end of the course, those who participate will have a better understanding of money, a greater awareness of their own situation, their income and their spending, and will feel more confident with their day-to-day financial decisions.”

Participants in the course can expect to:

•Understand the role of values in your financial decisions and develop financial goals that are based on your personal values

•Learn how a budget is a spending plan to help you to reach your financial goals

•Understand, identify, and improve sources of income

•Develop an awareness of how you spend and the importance of planning for expenses

•Understand the role of debt in your financial life

•Create your plan for your retirement

Course and registration details can be found on the PACE website at https://www.college.bm/pace.
