Businesses seek boost in tough times
MPs are today expected to discuss plans to boost business in St George’s and Somerset with Economic Empowerment Zones. The proposals which include areas such as the town of St George in the East and Mangrove Road in the West are intended to help small businesses survive during the economic crisis.An Economic Empowerment Zone has been operating in North East Hamilton for four years, attempting to help develop the area by offering financial support and advice to businesses.Many have long dubbed St George’s a ghost town, while residents at both ends of the Island have pointed to the need for regeneration.Shadow Finance Minister Bob Richards will have more opportunity to speak about Government overspending when the Supplementary Estimate No. 2 for Financial Year 2010-11 comes up for debate; that means Government must seek approval for spending in the past fiscal year which went beyond what was budgeted for.
