Clifton expected to become residence of Premier Cox
Premier Paula Cox is understood to be moving to the official residence of Clifton after Deputy Governor David Arkley was asked to move out.Ms Cox is believed to be making plans to move having expressed her interest in the Government-owned property when she became Premier in November last year. The traditional Bermuda home, which is more than 200 years old, in Devonshire boasts five bedrooms with impressive views overlooking Hamilton Harbour.Mr Arkley moved out several weeks ago as Government “had other plans” for the property. He moved the short distance to his official residence of Montpelier, next to the Arboretum.Cabinet made the decision to designate Clifton, which is valued at more than $1.5 million, as the official residence of the Premier of Bermuda. The land remains the property of Bermuda. But former Premier Dr Ewart Brown controversially decided to live in his private home with additional security measures leaving Clifton temporarily unused.Sources say Ms Cox, who currently lives with her family in a private home, is keen to move to Clifton. In her First 100 Days ‘Resetting the Dial’ speech, she said Montpelier was being renovated to house Mr Arkley.Former PLP Premier Alex Scott lived at Clifton for the last few months of his tenure in 2006.He said: “Clifton certainly lends itself to a property suitable for the leader of the country.“It is a treasured old Bermuda estate built in the 1800s with beautiful views of Hamilton Harbour.“There’s plenty of room and it’s set in about three acres. We very much enjoyed living there. The house is a real asset to Bermuda.”Clifton, which was formerly used to home colonial civil servants and Chief Justices, has five bedrooms. Three of these are in the main house, with a further two bedrooms in an adjoining apartment next to the kitchen. It has a large kitchen and dining room suitable for entertaining, a spacious living room and a veranda with water views. It is also in a sought-after location, just minutes away from Hamilton.Mr Scott added: “I initiated it as the official Premier residence, so I’d be very happy to see that policy pick up again.”Mr Arkley, who has been Deputy Governor since October 2009, said he moved out of Clifton as agreed with the Government.Mr Arkley’s wife Melissa, 42, was found dead at Clifton in January and her sudden death was “one factor” for his willingness to move. He was previously reported as saying the pair had many “good memories” including watching the sun set from the veranda at Clifton.Mr Arkley said: “I didn’t ask to move, the decision was made, but it was a collaborative process.“Government are the owners and they had other plans for the property.“When I moved to Bermuda, I knew I was only at Clifton on a temporary basis, but I wasn’t sure how long that temporary period would last.“I enjoyed being at Clifton, but nobody has been put out here. It was never my intention to be there forever and a day.“I now live at Montpelier and as far as I’m concerned it’s an excellent property and completely appropriate for a Deputy Governor.”Ms Cox and Government Estates did not respond to our requests for comment yesterday.
