MP Randy Horton named deputy speaker of the House

PLP backbencher Randy Horton promised fellow politicians they would get “the very best” from him as deputy speaker of the House of Assembly.The MP for Southampton West was named the House’s new deputy speaker after Wayne Perinchief was appointed National Security Minister.Mr Horton was nominated by PLP MP Marc Bean and seconded by UBP MP John Barritt. Mr Barritt said he would be “very pleased” to second the nomination as he couldn’t think of anyone better for the job.Mr Horton told the House of Assembly on Friday: “I am indeed honoured to have been given the opportunity to serve this House in this manner and I can certainly assure you that you will get the very best from this member.”Mr Horton, who is well known for both his political stature and sporting accomplishments, became a PLP MP in the 1998 general election.He represented Bermuda internationally in cricket and football and was principal of Warwick Secondary School for ten years.The House needed to nominate a new deputy speaker as Mr Perinchief had to resign from the post when he was sworn in as National Security Minister.House Speaker Stanley Lowe read out a letter from Mr Perinchief saying he resigned from his deputy speaker role with “great regret.”The floor was thrown open for the election of a deputy speaker, but Mr Horton was the only person nominated. A deputy speaker is supposed to serve for a maximum of five years unless dissolved.
