Overseas adoption bill to be debated
Laws tightening the way psychologists are governed and the way children are adopted from overseas will be discussed in the House of Assembly today. The Adoption of Children Amendment Bill means youngsters can only be brought into Bermuda for adoption from a list of approved jurisdictions. It also means permission must be obtained from a court when a child is transferred to the Island, while it will become an offence for a child to be placed for adoption overseas without permission from the Director of Child and Family Services. The only other bill scheduled for debate today is the Psychologists Practitioners Amendment Act, which will require psychologists have both practical experience and continuing education credits in order for their certificates to be renewed. It also means members of the Bermuda Psychologists Registration Council will be allowed to be paid a fee.The legislation also removes a restriction in the 1998 Act that states psychologists must stop practising as a result of old age.
