Government Senator LaVerne Furbert yesterday hit out at a magazine article which attacked the affluent lifestyle of politicians.Sen Furbert described Gavin Shorto’s column in Bermudian magazine as “an affront and an insult to every MP”.She said Mr Shorto claimed MPs are attracted to the power and lifestyle of suits, BlackBerrys and travel, and they no longer put the good of the Country first.“I know many politicians from both sides of the House,” she told the Senate. “I do not think, the people that I know anyway, that any of these people are in it for the headlines, for the power, for the BlackBerrys and the suits.“I think Mr Shorto owes an apology to this Government, to the people of Bermuda, to the MPs. It’s really appalling.”Sen Furbert said the “Combined Opposition” former Premier Ewart Brown’s term for everyone he said was out to get him now includes Bermudian magazine, The Royal Gazette, the Bermuda Sun and “other media who seem to come together”.Fellow Progressive Labour Party Senator David Burt said visiting politicians from the Cayman Islands used the term “friendly fire” to refer to negative press in their own newspapers.Sen Burt said: “We need, as Bermudians, to be more positive about what it is that we can offer.”Sen Furbert also criticised local group The Bermudians, which had won praise from other Senators for their hit song and music video Proud to be Bermudian. She said she couldn’t forgive that group for their protest against Dr Brown two years ago, claiming yesterday they had verbally and “almost physically” attacked her.“I’m not passionate or anxious to buy that DVD as some are,” said Sen Furbert.“Maybe I need a spirit of forgiveness but right now it’s not in me, because I was publicly embarrassed by a member of that group on the television.”
