High interest from public to join OBA’s shadow boards
People with no history in party politics have been coming forward to join One Bermuda Alliance’s shadow boards, according to chairman Michael Fahy. The National Security shadow board has generated the most interest from the public, Mr Fahy told The Royal Gazette as he gave an update on the system designed to give more people a say in forming policies. The OBA is recruiting members to sit on shadow boards for each Ministry, with a chairman to be appointed as a spokesman for each shadow board.Mr Fahy would not reveal how many people have made themselves available so far, but said: “We have had significant interest, especially from people wanting to sit on the National Security board.“There’s real problems in this Country, and people are wondering what we are going to do from here.“We’ve had interest from people of all backgrounds. Some of them weren’t involved with any party before, which is great and we are happy about that. And it’s not over 50s. These are people in their early 20s.“People are finding it’s a way of getting involved. Too often, they don’t feel they are listened to; they don’t feel Government is listening to them.“Now they have an opportunity to have a voice other than the few minutes they might get at a town hall meeting.”The shadow board system was also used in the short-lived Bermuda Democratic Alliance.Mr Fahy, who chaired the BDA, explained why it is being adopted by the OBA: “We are a new party and we are keen to have as many people involved from as much of a cross-section as possible.“We want to get as many views as possible for what’s right for the Country.“People are asking what real change is. Our view is we are having real change by getting people involved. Policy is going to be made at a shadow board level. They will be able to advise the Shadow Minister and help us come up with policies.”OBA secretary Toni Daniels placed this message on Facebook last Friday: “Get involved! So many of you have indicated a strong desire for change be a part of that paradigm shift!“The OBA Shadow Boards are looking for as much support as possible. We need your input; your involvement; your work; yourexperience. It’s the only wat change will ever occur.”lUseful websites: www.oba.bm
