MPs to debate security
For the second time in just over a year, MPs will today debate a new law requiring security guards and private detectives to go on training programmes. The Private Investigators and Security Guards Act was amended last year to force them to get licences which show they’ve completed suitable training, as part of a move to counter gangs and anti-social behaviour plaguing the Island.Further changes to the Act will be discussed in the House of Assembly today, amid suggestions from the Opposition that last year’s amendments weren’t detailed enough. One proposed alteration tightens up the rules over training, allowing the Police Commissioner to decide which institutions have suitable programmes. Also up for debate today is the Legal Executives (Registration) Act, which gives recognition to the profession of Legal Executive, establishing a Legal Executives Registration Council in a move supported by the Bar.Neither bill is seen as contentious and both have support from the One Bermuda Alliance, pointing to another relatively quiet session on the hill.
