Senator spearheads drive to register Island’s unemployed

By Jonathan BellGovernment yesterday launched an Island-wide campaign in hopes of registering Bermuda’s unemployed.Two venues at the East End were used St George’s Town Hall and St David’s Cricket Club.The stations will move across the Island this week.Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Kim Wilson yesterday said approximately 150 people registered either in person or online via the gov.bm website.“We have only just started, so I think we will see greater numbers as this moves through the Island. It was just the first day. People have been registering online and we are anticipating that more will do so.”Current unemployment data gives Bermuda’s rate as 4.5 percent the figure comes from a 2009 Labour Force survey. Senator Wilson said it was vital to get all the Island’s jobless registered, to help develop training and job placement programmes.“I can assure that the information shared will be treated in confidence,” she said.A registration drive will be held from 4pm to 8pm today at the Harrington Workmen’s Club, for those wishing to register in person.Senator Wilson is to be present at Devonshire Recreation Club to talk with persons who register there tomorrow.She told the Upper House this morning: “Madam President, I will personally be on hand tomorrow, Thursday, June 23 at 4pm at the Devonshire Recreation Club Unemployment Registration Station, where I and members of my team will talk to unemployed people in the community to learn more about the challenges they are experiencing in their job search efforts. I am committed to identifying practical solutions to assist them in their search.“The aim Madam President is to ensure that every Bermudian has an equal opportunity to work in their own Country should they choose to do so. We recognise that part of the process involves working with industry to add jobs to the marketplace and this important work too is part of the process.”
