Five PLP members eye Sandys South Central
Lawyer Larry Scott, Senator Kim Wilson and Progressive Labour Party organiser Makai Dickerson are part of a five-way battle to replace retiring Sandys South Central MP Walter Lister.PLP executive officer Dawn Simmons and party member Marcus Jones are thought to complete the line-up in Constituency 34, where a primary is scheduled for September 22.The stronghold is one of the party’s most hotly contested constituencies after Mr Lister announced he would step down from the role he’s served since 1976 at the next general election.Sen Wilson, the Sandys-based Economy Minister, has made no secret of her ambition to get into the House of Assembly and lost out to Marc Bean at the Warwick South Central by-election last year.Mr Scott, a former United Bermuda Party Senator and the brother of Attorney General Michael Scott, yesterday confirmed his interest in the post, pledging to “work my butt off” to beat the intense competition.Mr Dickerson, 29, another West End-based member and seen by some as a rising star within the party, has often spoken of the need for more young people to be given their chance.Mr Scott, who has recently published a book ‘It’s Only Four Percent Crime in Bermuda’, said: “There’s going to be a mad dash to the finish line. It’s not a shoe-in for me. I shall have to work my butt off to do that but I’m interested in doing so.“I have always had an interest in politics and of course I had my marriage with the UBP but that’s of no consequence now.“It’s a question of service. Our Country needs good people to come to the fore to help.”He said his key interest is Bermuda’s social problems, particularly young black males, whose plight he analyses in his book.“We can do better by them,” he said. “I have got ideas I intend to express more candidly moving forwards.“I really do think we can to a heck of a lot better; we are wasting so much talent, setting some terribly bad examples for them.”Mr Dickerson said: “It is my intention to stand on behalf of the people of Constituency 34 in an honest, persistent and truly honourable way no matter, race, religion, party affiliation, or any label used to determine one’s way of life.“There is much struggle, hurt and pain in these times and the people deserve representation truly on their behalf. I offer this to the people.“Through the support for me shown by others, combined with my commitment to see Bermuda out of any hardship and into comfortable times, I know that I can help do it.“It is time that differences be put aside and we all work together for the betterment of Bermuda. If my desires are met then Bermuda will definitely have a soldier working for that.”Mr Dickerson said Constituency 34 has a “great pool of talent” to choose from, adding: “If everyone brings their talent to the table then I am confident that the PLP will have a quality candidate to put forward, regardless if it is me or not.“I will let others speak for themselves but will end with a word to all of Bermuda.“Judge wisely and informatively and truly decide on the person you are most confident in, and vote accordingly in any election you take part in.“Let’s put the best people forward for Bermuda, there is good on every side so let’s put it together to take Bermuda home.”Sen Wilson said: “It is my desire to serve in any capacity that the party sees fit. I care deeply about the people of Bermuda and I will continue to work to help create a better Bermuda for all. I am committed to sharing my knowledge, experience, passion and commitment with my community. I am here to serve.”Ms Simmons and Mr Jones could not be reached.Useful websites: www.plp.bm.
