Cannonier not worried by Sullivan by-election challenge
One Bermuda Alliance leader Craig Cannonier said he’s unfazed by former United Bermuda Party deputy chair David Sullivan throwing his hat in the ring for the Devonshire South Central by-election.Mr Sullivan is to run as an Independent in Constituency 12 a district traditionally a bastion of the former United Bermuda Party.Progressive Labour Party candidate Anthony Richardson also seeks to represent the area.An OBA source said Sen Cannonier is working closely in his campaign with former interim leader of the party John Barritt, who stepped down as MP of the area to enable Sen Cannonier to run.The stakes are high for Sen Cannonier, who needs to win in order to get a House of Assembly seat and secure his position as Opposition Leader. It’s believed that Mr Barritt’s popularity with the people he represented for nearly 20 years will be carried over for the Senator, if the two work in tandem.“They’ve said they’re taking nothing for granted,” the party source said. “They are out every day talking with the people, trying to win their trust and support. That direct contact every day is how this election will be won.”For both men, it was added, “there are no shortcuts, just solid doorstep campaigning, one street at a time”.Sen Cannonier refused to respond to remarks made by Mr Sullivan that both the OBA and PLP have “parachuted” candidates into the constituency. In a statement last night, the OBA leader said: “John and I are out in the constituency every day, talking with the people of Devonshire South Central, working hard to earn their trust and support, one person, one household at a time. That’s my commitment, that’s my goal, and I would be doing that regardless of who else is running.”Asked about Mr Sullivan’s candidacy in the key district, the former UBP’s leader Kim Swan declined to comment. The by-election takes place on November 1.Editorial: Page 4
