David Burch to run in PLP primary
Former Minister Colonel David Burch is making another bid for selection as a ruling party candidate for the next general election, The Royal Gazette has learned. The Colonel’s last minute bid means that four people will seek approval tomorrow as the Progressive Labour Party’s candidate for Constituency 27 (Warwick North Central). As expected, former Minister El James has not put his name forward, but party insiders have confirmed the field as Ianthia Simmons Wade, the widow of the late PLP Leader Frederick Wade, union executive and former area MP George Scott, Senator Cromwell Shakir, and Colonel Burch.“I decided to put my hat in the ring because it was time to move from being a supporter to being an active participant in the process,” said Ms Simmons Wade. “It’s a tight race but I go into things to win. I’m running against a former MP, a sitting Senator and a former MP and Minister, so I just have to do my best.“If this is my time, I will win. If I don’t win it’s not my time, but I believe it’s my time.”In 2007, Ms Simmons Wade was passed over by the party hierarchy even though she was the branch favourite to represent constituency 28 (Warwick West). But she remained committed to her party and cites that commitment, her deep family roots in the area and a legacy of professional and community contributions in her campaign literature. For Mr. Scott a victory would be a return to his political roots. He’s ran in every election in the area since 1989 and finally won the constituency 27 seat in 2003.When Elvin James was selected as the candidate for the 2007 general election, Mr. Scott was made the flag-bearer for Constituency 28 but failed to win the seat for the PLP.Mr. James handily won the Warwick North Central seat for the PLP with over 56 percent of the vote.Colonel Burch lost against Health Minister Zane DeSilva for the Southampton East candidate selection contest last month.Neither Colonel Burch nor Senator Shakir could be reached for comment.
