Rental property's spruce up is hailed a work programme success

A beachfront residence overlooking John Smith's Bay will come up for rent after being overhauled under a Government work programme.The spruced up Government-owned house, ‘Sea Song', was unveiled by Economy Minister Kim Wilson and Government Estates Minister Neletha Butterfield.It is the first property to be renovated under a scheme partnering the two ministries with the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation's (BSBDC) construction incubator programme.Sen Wilson said the aim was to provide work to small construction and contracting businesses during the economic downturn.The job, handled by Solo Contracting, was completed “on budget and on time”, Sen Wilson said.Manager Dennis Simons said the work had taken two of his staff two months to complete and cost $120,000. The two-apartment building, which used to house lifeguards, was in “bad shape”, he said.It has since been given new cabinets and appliances, and fresh paint and windows. A porch with Bermuda cedar rails looks down on the beach.Ms Butterfield said the property will be used to bring in rental income.The next project, at Southside, will be done by Packwood Painting and Maintenance.A similar work scheme, the Small Works Jobs Initiative, has so far provided 23 people with ten-week work stints at Government-owned facilities, Sen Wilson said.MarCarty Construction won the contract through the BSBDC, and is now three weeks into work.They have been repainting post offices and post boxes around the Island, as well as the Boys Home in Devonshire.Useful website: www.bsbdc.bm.
