PLP considers how to settle Butterfield/Burt candidacy tie
The ruling Progressive Labour Party is actively considering how to proceed in the candidacy battle for constituency 18, following last week’s tie between Senator David Burt and Cabinet Minister Neletha Butterfield. No decision has been made, according to PLP Public Relations Officer, Curtis Williams.“The next step is under active consideration and you will be apprised once a decision has been made,” Mr. Williams said.Under changes brought about under the leadership of former Party Leader Ewart Brown, the PLP Constitution gives party branches the final say on who represents the constituencies at general elections, and paid up party members simply have to indicate their interest in serving in order to challenge incumbents and spark off a selection contest. But the PLP Constitution provides no specific guidance on what should happen in the event of repeated ties. The pair’s contest at West Pembroke Primary School last month ended with no result amid allegations Ms Butterfield’s 17-year-old grandson took part in the vote. That outcome prompted last week’s rematch which ended in a tie.Branch members appeared to be divided as to how to proceed. While some felt that the Party Leader, Premier Paula Cox should make the final decision, others believed that the incumbent should be the candidate since the challenger had failed to unseat her. Few had the appetite for yet another round of voting.
