Bermudians Against the Draft (BAD) have called for an extra box, labelled “none of the above” to be added to the general election ballot paper.The campaign group is urging young black men not to vote for either of Bermuda’s main political parties since neither backs their campaign to end military conscription.BAD claims young black men have been the group most affected by conscription, and that they feel marginalised and maligned in society in general.The group hopes an extra box would allow those backing the campaign to participate in the democratic process, while at the same time signalling a lack of confidence in the available candidates.BAD announced plans for a total general election boycott in August, which was condemned by Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief, who said it was “quite simply irresponsible”. Governor Richard Gozney said it was “turning logic on its head” and the One Bermuda Alliance said that “telling people not to vote is not the answer”.A general election has to be called in Bermuda by the end of next year.BAD leader Larry Marshall Sr said that rather than a total vote boycott, it will now be encouraging people to vote, but to tick “none of the above” on the ballot box.He e-mailed Premier Paula Cox on Thursday, requesting an additional box on the ballot paper for this person.“As you are aware BAD has called for an election boycott due to the unwillingness of all political parties to end conscription. The support for such a boycott has been encouraging and has transcended the issue itself. Many Bermudians are totally dissatisfied with the current government as well as the opposition parties,” he wrote.“This discontent and dissatisfaction has been simmering for some time and was reflected in the past two general elections when approximately 75 percent of eligible voters actually participated. That means 25 percent did not participate and for such a small country that is a significant percentage. Put another way one out of four Bermudians did not vote.“It is our belief that if this particular group, which is indeed significant, had the opportunity to tick a box ‘none of the above,’ they would participate. It is also our belief that the Government should provide that box in order to ensure that dissatisfied voters have a means of legitimately expressing their disapproval of all candidates.”Mr Marshall added: “We believe that voting ‘none of the above’ is actually a positive action to vote ‘no confidence’ in the standing candidates. Bermudians should not be put in the position of having to vote for the ‘lesser of two evils,’ so to speak.”He said many other countries have a ‘none of the above’ box and that implementing it in Bermuda would be “a step forward for democracy”.The Royal Gazette invited Ms Cox and the One Bermuda Alliance to comment, but no response was forthcoming by press time.
