Challenger Senator David Burt won a vote last night to become the ruling party’s election candidate for Pembroke West Central, leaving incumbent Minister Butterfield contemplating the end of her political career. Both candidates indicated that the vote may not be the final say on who becomes the candidate.“All I can say is ‘in with Wayne, out with Wayne’,” said Minister Butterfield referring to National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief who was voted out in favour of Walton Brown in the neighbouring Pembroke Central constituency. It was the third round of voting for the branch. Two earlier votes ended in a tie. While she wished her challenger all the best, Minister Butterfield made it clear that she questioned the process.“I think what happened here is when you keep calling and calling for another primary, your numbers are going to change,” said Minister Butterfield.“For instance, four of my supporters are overseas.“They left on Saturday. This is the week that school is out and we also have to respect that people have to travel.”She said she was thankful to the voters of Pembroke West Central for coming out.“I think for them coming out shows they do have a commitment to the branch and they should continue to have that commitment to the branch.“And I’m thankful to them because I personally think that was very unreasonable for the party to continue to ask them to come out.”She said that Roberts Rules should have applied, where the incumbent remains should a challenger fail to garner the majority of the votes.“I would say that 100 percent of the supporters all called and said that they felt that because I’ve worked hard in the constituency and because I was a sitting Member of Parliament, they thought it was unreasonable that the party should even put someone up against me.”But the Minister cautioned that the candidacy decision was not final and that the Candidates Committee would make the final selection. She added that should she not be selected as the candidate, it would be the end of her political career and she would not accept a Senate seat.“If they don’t accept me now and allow this to happen, no I would not be interested in the Senate.“I’ve been in the Senate for five years already and I am one person that don’t go back, I move forward.”She said she had lots of options besides politics and may well accept an offer off the island.Senator Burt said: “I think the most important thing for the Progressive Labour Party is unity.“We need unity and we need to go from strength to strength and if I do become the candidate, I hope that this party will unify and move forward.“Minister Butterfield has given tremendous service to this country and I look forward to working with her in whatever capacity going forward.”Minister Butterfield has served as a Cabinet Minister for every administration since the Progressive Labour Party came into power in 1998.The party did not confirm the actual results of the vote. The Royal Gazette understands that the turnout was slightly higher than in the previous two rounds of voting.
