The One Bermuda Alliance yesterday unveiled three young caucus members it says reflect the party’s “broad church approach”.Stratton Hatfield, 25, Alexis Swan, 24, and Alissa Hayward, 26, members of the Alliance’s ‘Future Group’, are all playing a valuable role developing party strategies, leader Senator Craig Cannonier told a press conference at Barr’s Bay Park.Mr Hatfield told the media: “As the younger generation of Bermuda and future of Bermuda, we feel honoured to be part of the OBA.“We realise that now is the time for us to speak up and be heard. Ten years down the line, we will be the ones working together as a team.”Sen Cannonier said: “The OBA believes in true integration for everyone in the political arena and inclusiveness. Everyone should have a stake and a say in how we govern ourselves and work with one another.“These people are the future of the OBA. We continue to encourage them to be a part of the political process.”Mr Hatfield, who sits on the OBA’s education shadow board and communications team, said he moved to the new party from the Bermuda Democratic Alliance after agreeing with Sen Cannonier’s “fresh approach”.“We are trying to let our generation know their voice can be heard if you do speak up,” Mr Hatfield, a maintenance sales representative for Air Care, told The Royal Gazette.“We are trying to get more people involved with this movement.”He said most of his generation are only familiar with a Progressive Labour Party Government, which he says has not managed the Country successfully.“It’s been 13 years since the PLP’s been in power. Realistically, that’s the only power we have known,” he said.“We want to bring our children up in Bermuda and we want them to go through a successful, productive education system, live in a crime-free environment with access to jobs and an economy that’s growing.“We don’t see that right now. We are really thinking about our future and we believe strongly that there needs to be change.”Of his decision to join the OBA, Mr Hatfield said: “I was looking for something that puts aside legacy and puts Bermuda first.”Critics have argued the OBA is a mere reincarnation of the United Bermuda Party, which collapsed earlier this year after losing three successive general elections.Mr Hatfield said: “If the PLP were to dissolve and form a new entity, would some of their long-standing members not join that entity?“Bermuda is such a small place and there are not many political places for people to go.”Asked whether any of the three young members would stand as candidates at the next general election, Ms Hayward, a freelance cinematographer, said they first hoped to learn from the more seasoned politicians.“Right now, we may not be here to run as candidates just yet, but nobody’s saying it can’t happen in the future,” she said.Ms Swan, an accounts representative for Colonial and a member of the group’s communications team and volunteers committee, encouraged young people to attend an open mic youth event at Moon nightclub on Front Street on Saturday, from 7pm to 9.30pm.“It’s a community-driven event and we are looking for ideas for the OBA so anyone can come forward to take part,” she told the press conference. For more information about the open mic event, see the group’s Facebook page.
