Government should look into immigration controls for people from the Middle East if it wishes to develop Bermuda as a jurisdiction for Islamic finance, according to the Opposition One Bermuda Alliance.Speaking during yesterday’s Senate Throne Speech debate, Opposition Senator Michael Fahy said that he welcomed the idea which was mooted in Government’s Throne Speech.“One of the items that I think probably needs to be explored is Immigration controls in relation to persons coming from some of these Islamic financial centres,” Sen Fahy said.He noted that his Bahraini sister in law spent three to four months trying to get a visa to come to Bermuda.“I hope the government is looking at that carefully, to encourage some of those individuals.”
