Overseas Territories discus White Paper, security issues
Security matters were flagged as issues of concern at the Overseas Territory Consultative Council (OTCC) meeting this week.Premier Paula Cox joined leaders from other British Overseas Territories for the annual gathering in London, chaired by Overseas Territories Minister Henry Bellingham.Foreign Secretary William Hague addressed the OTCC on its Wednesday opening, and affirmed the UK’s support for a partnership with its 14 territories.Drug smuggling, illegal aliens and poaching were all topics of concern for the territories. The proposed White Paper for the Overseas Territories was also discussed.International Security Strategy Minister Gerald Howarth said his submission to the White Paper will include security matters, air links, economic development and diversification, governance, and maintaining effective relations between the leaders of the territories and their appointed Governors.Ms Cox also used the trip to meet with Bermudians studying and living in the UK, on Tuesday night.The meeting, organised by Government’s London office, enables Bermudians in the UK to speak directly with the Premier.Wednesday night’s Bermuda Society Dinner was hosted by Baroness Pamela Sharples in the House of Lords.Bermuda Monetary Authority CEO Jeremy Cox addressed the gathering, attended by senior executives and heads of companies with links to the Island.
