Swan calls for Tourism Authority

Government should “just do it”, and establish a Tourism Authority, MP Kim Swan said.A recent Tourism Board report lists the creation of an Authority as a “hot button issue”, alongside gaming and the development of new hotels.Mr Swan called the implementation of a Tourism Authority “the most obvious and significant” of the Board’s findings, pointed out that it had been recommended in the Bermuda First Report. That report, which came out in 2009, presented a study of the weak points in the Island’s tourism industry.“The recommendation repeatedly comes up [and] gets sidestepped,” Mr Swan, who was elected as a United Bermuda Party MP said.“The country is in such a dire economic state, that this recommendation is actually an opportunity for the Government to give people hope and engage our best minds and entrepreneurs.”He equated the move to establishing “an economic coalition to rebuild the country”, and called for a Bermuda Tourism Authority to be set up in 2012.
