Approval given to land registration system
Legislation moving Bermuda from deeds-based property transactions to a parcel-based land registration system has been approved by the Senate. The landmark Land Title Registration Act 2011 was supported by all Senators. But a major concern was about provisions in the law that allowed government to take over land if it was not registered within three years.“I just find it staggering that we would do something like that,” said Senator Fahy on Friday. But Attorney General Senator Kim Wilson said that the law was not intended to dispossess people of their land. If a bona fide owner could demonstrate after the deadline their claim then they would be the owner of the land, she said. And if the land has been developed by then, the owner would be entitled to compensation.
