Cannonier just out to score points Cox
Premier Paula Cox has dismissed calls from the One Bermuda Alliance leader to clarify her stance on controversial statements made by her Security Minister about the International Business sector. The Premier said the call by One Bermuda Alliance Leader Craig Cannonier amounted to an attempt by his party to “to jockey for position to score political points”.“These are all games being played at a time when Bermuda cannot afford gamesmanship. So I will not respond to the Opposition Leader’s call for me to clarify statements made by the Minister of National Security.”The National Security Minister, Wayne Perinchief, had stated in an interview with this newspaper that the sector had “an obligation, not just a civic responsibility” to provide more money to help Bermuda tackle gun crime. While declining to respond directly to Mr Cannonier’s criticism, Ms Cox’s statement amounted to strong support for her Ministers.“The Government has been clear in articulating what we plan to do and the importance of International Business in helping us to realise our goals.“The Minister and Junior Minister have been diligent in working tirelessly to address the issues of law and good order and have been clear as to the importance of addressing this for the safety and security of all or Bermuda residents locals and international business alike.”She continued: “Our young people have spoken clearly. While we welcome and encourage international business, we must be mindful of the legitimate career aspirations of Bermudians.“This Government will continue to stand up for Bermudians, and this was reflected in the Incentives for Job-Makers Act which required Jobs for Bermudians to qualify for incentives.“It was not a one size fits all model but it is not a blank cheque and it does require taking account of the community’s interests.“Bermuda is a very attractive domicile and we will continue to be sought after as a premier jurisdiction.“The Government is keenly aware of the importance of maintaining attractiveness and competitiveness in this challenging economic environment and we will redouble our efforts to spur growth.”She called for a “proper perspective” and “serious discussion” on the issues.“The people of this country deserve serious discussion on the issues and this country’s future. That requires serious people committed to this country and the best outcome for Bermuda,” Premier Cox said.“In my view those people are on my team, and in the PLP Government. I am not going to address yesterday’s news to create a profile for other persons seeking relevance.“This Government will continue to lead and our team will focus on the challenging work that lies ahead as we look to secure the best position for Bermuda and its people.”
