Marcus Jones with Premier Paula Cox as he is unveiled as a PLP candidate at the next general election.

Marcus Jones, a 20 year veteran of the hospitality industry and former manager in the Department of Tourism, has been announced as the ruling party's candidate for Pembroke South West for the next general election.Premier Paula Cox introduced Mr Jones as a “man of commitment, a man of conscience and a man of credibility”.In his prepared remarks, the candidate said that the political landscape needed “servant leaders”.“Bermuda is in desperate need for servant leadership within the Government,” he said.“A new breed of politicians is emerging and the PLP Government is well aware of the need for new faces and personalities to make up its team.”He appealed to Pembroke South West voters to let him into their homes to “tell the PLP story, unfiltered by the media and those who have an ingrained political bias against it”.He counted former Finance Minister the late Eugene Cox and the late Dame Lois Browne-Evans as key figures who influenced his thinking about the Progressive Labour Party in his younger years. He said the PLP as Government had demonstrated that it “cares for those who are less fortunate than others but strikes a balance by being a friend and partner to international and local businesses”.Mr Jones acknowledged that the district, currently held by retiring MP Louise Jackson, has traditionally voted for a United Bermuda Party in his remarks to the media today. But he said he was hoping to persuade the constituents that it is better to have someone from the ruling party represent them in Parliament.“The present political system does not allow for your viewpoint to be effectively heard unless you have representative who is a member of the ruling party. We all know that.”
