Hospitality industry veteran to stand as PLP candidate
Marcus Jones, a 20-year veteran of the hospitality industry and former manager in the Department of Tourism, has been announced as the ruling party’s candidate for Pembroke South West for the next General Election.Premier Paula Cox introduced Mr Jones as a “man of commitment, a man of conscience and a man of credibility”.“A new breed of politicians is emerging and the PLP Government is well aware of the need for new faces and personalities to make up its team,” the candidate said.He appealed to Pembroke South West voters to let him into their homes to “tell the PLP story, unfiltered by the media and those who have an ingrained political bias against it”.He counted former Finance Minister the late Eugene Cox and the late Dame Lois Browne-Evans as key figures who influenced his thinking about the Progressive Labour Party in his younger years. He said the PLP as Government had demonstrated that it “cares for those who are less fortunate than others but strikes a balance by being a friend and partner to international and local businesses”.Mr Jones acknowledged that the district, currently held by retiring MP Louise Jackson, has traditionally voted for a United Bermuda Party. But he indicated he was hoping to persuade the constituents that it is better to have someone from the ruling party represent them in Parliament.“The present political system does not allow for your viewpoint to be effectively heard unless you have a representative who is a member of the ruling party. We all know that.”If Mr Jones is successful at the polls, he would be the first PLP representative for the area.Mrs Jackson won 83 percent of the vote against the PLP’s LaVerne Furbert in the last General Election.“With a worldwide economic recession that has not left our Island unscathed, moral values on the decline and families that are the foundation of any society divided, Bermuda is in desperate need for servant leadership within government,” Mr Jones said.“ We have an abundance of experience and youthful energy to inject into the political process and I am thrilled to be a part of that team.”Addressing the constituents directly, Mr Jones said: “I have heard your concerns regarding crime, the economy, the need to be more welcoming to our guest workers, to keep international business here and the need for good governance while canvassing on your doorsteps.“I will forcefully and consistently represent your interests and concerns. A vote for Marcus Jones is a vote for true representation, a caring and compassionate listener and an effective advocate for the issues that exists in Pembroke South West and Bermuda as a whole.”Asked whether there were any milestones left for the PLP to achieve, Mr Jones noted that the implementation of economic empowerment zones was helping the Government to “level the playing field” and make progress toward the goal of economic parity.“As long as there are still people within our communities that are struggling economically, for those that are still feeling that they don’t have a piece of the pie the PLP Government’s work is still moving on and still has work to be done.”Mr Jones was general manager of 9 Beaches Resort from 2002 to 2006. He served a stint as manager at the Department of Tourism until 2010 before opening his own hospitality consultancy business, Covenant Hospitality Solutions. The OBA has not announced its candidate for Pembroke South West.
