MP’s aunt ‘petrified’ after witnessing machete fight
The “petrified” elderly aunt of former Opposition Leader Kim Swan witnessed a machete attack at the Rangers sports club, he revealed to political colleagues. The MP, who was elected under the United Bermuda Party banner, was speaking during a debate on violent crime as the House of Assembly adjourned on Friday evening.Shawn Crockwell of the One Bermuda Alliance expressed concern over several recent home invasions.“People feel unsafe because of the nature of the crime that is on the increase, this type of heinous crime,” he said.Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief praised police for prompt arrests and charges in recent cases, including some of the home invasions. He also sought to reassure members of the public.“The crime situation in Bermuda is not out of control. A lot of it is still the targeted situation with gangsters. I’m not mitigating the seriousness of it, or that these people involved in gangs continue to do tit for tat (crimes) against each other, but it is targeted.“The general public need not feel they are at a high degree of risk. Take the normal precautions, yes, but I don’t want people to have a feeling of panic,” he advised. However, Mr Swan then took to his feet to express his concern over recent violent incidents at sports clubs on the Island. There was a shooting at Somerset Cricket Club early on Good Friday, leaving two men with minor injuries, and a machete fight next to Southampton Rangers cricket club later that day involving eight people. One man was chopped in the head. The machete brawl occurred during a family fun day.Mr Swan said: “What happened at Rangers touched my home and family as well. My 80-year-old aunt was there and saw it.”He added: “My aunt is somewhat petrified to have watched something like that.”Minister of Public Works Michael Weeks said, however, that there is much positive work going on in the Island’s sporting establishments.“That element pervading our sports clubs is a very small one,” he said.
