UBP: Give us equal time on CITV
The United Bermuda Party are calling for opposition parties to be given equal time on CITV in the build up to the coming general election. In a recent statement, Kim Swan said that while CITV offers culturally diverse and educational programming, it is unfair to give Government Ministers airtime without offering opposition members the same opportunities.“Currently, the Premier is featured in an exclusive interview hosted by a civil servant on CITV and we feel equal time is in order,” Mr Swan said.“The people are now in election mode in Bermuda and the Premier is the only person who constitutionally knows the date of the next election.“We deem there to be a violation of the broadcast regulations for the Premier and Government Ministers to be able to exclusively utilise CITV (especially during this period) to convey their message to the people and whilst the oppositions do not have the same opportunity.”According to the statement, the party has written to Broadcasting Commissioners Board Chairman Fanon Khaldun and Deputy Chairman Phil Perinchief to consider the matter.“When one recognises that the date of the general election could be announced at anytime before year end, we consider this matter urgent and we anxiously and respectfully await a response from the new Board,” Mr Swan said.Mr Swan also complained about the media during the Motion to Adjourn in the House of Assembly on Friday evening. He said that he plans to highlight what he views as biased reporting, and refer the public to the written records of proceedings in the House of Assembly when he takes issue with “selective” reporting.
