MP calls for recruitment of volunteer firefighters
St George’s West MP Kim Swan urged Government to come up with a plan to recruit more volunteer firefighters.Mr Swan said the East End’s volunteer fire service has dwindled since it was amalgamated into Bermuda Fire Service in 2006, from 30 volunteers to seven. He also criticised the fact the recent closure of the fire station due to mould was not announced in the House of Assembly. The MP noted that when the Old Town was designated a World Heritage site, it had a fire service with a fire chief, a 24-hour fully staffed police station and an 18-hole golf course with pro shop, bar and restaurant. In a statement to The Royal Gazette after raising the matter in the House of Motion to Adjourn on Friday night, Mr Swan said: “Many St George’s residents have expressed concern that the closure of these important services could damage the Town’s UNESCO designation.“Notwithstanding the UNESCO concern, it is important to state that the closure of the St George’s fire station was necessary.“However, with no plans to repair the building or an alternative location means another traditional staple service within the Town of St George’s existence is threatened with numerous closures.“We contend, that a vibrant volunteer fire service can save the Country thousands of dollars whilst encouraging our citizens to give back to the Country in a meaningful way.”When Mr Swan raised his complaints on Friday evening, Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess responded that the matter had been discussed with him at a town-hall meeting, and that the fire service at Clearwater was adequate for the needs of St George’s.National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief assured the UBP interim leader: “Volunteers are actively being recruited and encouraged to join both services at Hamilton and St George’s.”In his statement, Mr Swan said the UBP felt it important to being the matter to Parliament because Government needs a clear plan to repair or replace the existing St George’s Fire Service, and restore volunteer numbers across the Island.
