OBA: We’re not out of the woods on reducing crime figures

The One Bermuda Alliance says it is encouraged by recent crime statistics but warned the country was not yet out of its crime crisis.Opposition leader Craig Cannonier, Shadow National Security Minister, noted that police crime statistics for the first quarter of 2012 released last week showed that Bermuda Police Service was “making relatively quick arrests on some serious crimes and they are netting more convictions”.“These are encouraging developments because the increased possibility of being caught and jailed, if sustained, may start deterring would-be lawbreakers. This is how law enforcement is supposed to work,” Mr Cannonier said.“But beyond the statistics of an overall downward trend in crime, there is the reality that crime continues to plague Bermuda. We are, in short, not out of the woods, not by a long shot.”Mr Cannonier noted that there had been more crimes against the person, with 36 firearms incidents, including one gun murder and two woundings. And he said that crimes against property and the community were also up.“We take no comfort whatsoever in the downward trend in crime,” Mr Cannonier continued.“Extremely serious problems remain, and they will require continuing and unprecedented efforts to reduce criminal activity.”He added: “We continue to support the police in their work and the growing number of residents stepping forward to assist, but we want to be clear about one thing: Bermuda remains in a crime crisis and no one should be led astray by a statistical overview that suggests otherwise.”Crime remains on a downward trend, according to police, despite a series of high-profile home invasions, it was reported on Thursday.Revealing the crime statistics for the first quarter of the year, Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva said total crime remained “virtually unchanged” from the previous quarter, with moderate increases in some areas and moderate decreases in others.
