Ministers Burgess and Furbert announced as PLP candidates

Wayne Furbert and Derrick Burgess were yesterday unveiled as the Progressive Labour Party’s candidates for constituency six and five respectively.Mr Furbert, Minister for Business Development and Tourism, said he would be happy to continuing serving Hamilton West.And he referenced his decision to join the ruling party, saying he had been encouraged to do so by an “elderly gentleman” after mulling an exit from politics following his resignation from the United Bermuda Party.“I was called to serve and serve I will,” said Mr Furbert.The former UBP Leader said: “I am so happy to be announced today as the Candidate for # 6 Hamilton West, for the Progressive Labour Party.“I do not take this announcement lightly, as there is no one that loves the people of Hamilton West more than I. I have worked this area since I was 14 years old, and have enjoyed every moment of it.”In the 2003 general election Mr Furbert won the district by 39 votes as a UBP candidate running against the PLP’s Wilbur Lowe. In 2007 his lead was only 21 votes against the PLP’s Charles Clarke.At the next election he will running against the OBA’s Donte Hunt, also a former UBP MP.“Many projects have been completed while serving. They run from bus stops, sidewalks, speed bumps, Shelly Bay Park, board walk along Shelly Bay stretch and the list goes on,” Mr Furbert continued.“Over the years I have enjoyed helping individuals find jobs, giving advice on financial matters, and giving turkeys out to seniors at Christmas.“The people of Hamilton West know me, as many are family and friends, I have been there for them, through their tears and joy and I know that they will be there for me, to deliver Constituency number six, whenever the election is held.”Constituency 5, Hamilton East, candidate Derrick Burgess who is also the Deputy Premier and Transport Minister described himself as “one of those Members of Parliament who is on your doorstep all year round, not just at election time”.He has represented the district since 1998.He said: “As a lifelong and committed trade unionist, I believe in team work and that it is only through teamwork that the Progressive Labour Party has been an effective and caring government since November 9, 1998. I also believe that it is the workers of this country who are the bedrock of our island home.”He added that PLP policies had “empowered our people”.“In 1963, the founders of the PLP called for equitable taxation, the removal of racial discrimination, greater economic parity, the implementation of healthcare programmes for insurance and pensions and better housing for our people, educational and electoral reforms,” Mr Burgess said.“I stand here proudly today knowing that the vision of our founders has not been lost and that the PLP continues to be a force to be reckoned with.”In 2003, Mr Burgess scored a 200 vote lead against the UBP’s Keetha Lowe and did even better in 2007 with a 556 vote lead against David Sullivan.Peter Barritt has been chosen by the OBA to contest the Hamilton East seat at the next general election.
