Drive aims to ensure residents are registered to vote
The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter (BAC) of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is hosting Bermuda’s first voter registration drive. The first event in a series organised in collaboration with the Parliamentary Registrar, took place at the Harbour Nights event on Front Street last Wednesday.Further events are scheduled throughout the summer.BAC president Roxanne Christopher explained: “Our main concern is to ensure that residents who are eligible to participate in the electoral process are registered to vote.“It is critical that our residents’ voter details are current with updated addresses and name changes. We reiterate that eligible individuals must exercise their right to vote, therefore acknowledging the historical struggles that many of our ancestors faced less than fifty years ago with securing the right to vote.”Assistant Parliamentary Registrar, Tenia Woolridge added: “The Parliamentary Registrar wants to ensure that voters are registered correctly, aiding in a smooth transition when the new constituency boundaries take effect at the next general election.“Oftentimes, those eligible Bermudians who are not registered or registered incorrectly simply need a little motivation to get their registration particulars in order, and we are excited to partner with one of Bermuda’s influential charity organisations to help spread the word.”The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 at Howard University. Today, it has more than 250,000 members and nearly 1,000 chapters worldwide. It is a non-partisan organisation which prohibits the endorsement of any political candidates or parties. For further information or to volunteer, contact BAC at 291-1676 or e-mail info@bermudadeltas.bm.
