Road Safety Council hands out reflective vests

Hundreds of free reflective vests and key chains have been handed out by the Road Safety Council in a bid to boost the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. The giveaway took place at Harbour Nights on Front Street, Hamilton, on Wednesday June 13.Outlining the initiative in the House of Assembly, Minister of Transport Walter Roban said there has been an increase in “pedestrian-related collisions and injuries on the roads of Bermuda over the past year”.He listed a variety of reasons including driver error, inattention and failing to wait to cross the street.“Safety and fairness on the roads means not only being concerned for the safety of drivers and riders but also the numerous walkers and runners who make use of the roads daily,” he said. There were a total of 300 reflective vests handed out, together with more than 1,200 reflective key rings, plus pamphlets promoting pedestrian safety.Mr Roban said further community-based events to promote road safety are in the pipeline. Anyone who would like information should call the Road Safety Office on 298-2349.
