'If we spent the money on infrastructure, why have the ferries broken down?'
Shadow Transport Minister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin questioned how Bermuda’s ferries are in such a poor state when Government claims to have spent all its money on infrastructure.Mrs Gordon-Pamplin told the House of Assembly some ferries appear to be held together with tissue paper and bubblegum as she claimed the system had badly deteriorated. And she complained many people were left stranded when the 7.55am Rockaway to Hamilton route was cancelled this week. The Paget West MP said Government has repeatedly blamed escalating debt on the fact it has invested heavily on infrastructure.“If we spent the money on infrastructure, why have the ferries broken down?” she asked during the Motion to Adjourn.“In some instances they appear to be held together with tissue paper and bubblegum.“We can’t on the one hand say we are spending $1 billion on infrastructure and on the other hand have such substandard equipment on the water.”She said Rockaway commuters had been advised to travel to Dockyard to catch a ferry, which was illogical, and that they can’t rely on buses because so many are also out of service.“We are starting to look like a very substandard jurisdiction,” she said. “That’s not the image we want to portray, nor is it a proficient use of the money we profess to have spent on infrastructure.”Transport Minister Walter Roban said the early Rockaway ferry was cancelled came after consultation with commuters, and had been announced some weeks ago.He conceded it was a mistake not to give them notice immediately before the cancellation came into effect, and said in future notices would go up at terminals.
