As the House of Assembly adjourned until November, United Bermuda Party leader Kim Swan reflected on his career and declared: “I take responsibility for what was wrong.”Listing the names of all the UBP premiers, Mr Swan said: “If they did anything wrong in the discourse of their premiership, I take responsibility as one who rode on their coat tails to get here today.”However, he added: “You can’t come to this honourable House, and look back on the history of this Country, and not recognise that the UBP did many good things in this Country.”Looking back on House affairs since the 2007 Election, Mr Swan also vowed: “The UBP will not be a whipping boy for anybody, while breath is in my body.”Saying he was “taking ownership for the mistakes the UBP made, and for the good things”, the St George’s West MP said he was “still UBP”.“I have come here to say this: that this Country needs representation that has a good focus on issues, not being driven by opinion polls.”Mr Swan concluded: “I am here today to tell you I am hanging around for the long haul.”Speaker of the House Stanley Lowe observed: “That’s what you call a bully pulpit speech.”One Bermuda Alliance MP for Paget West Pamela Pamplin-Gordon rose last in the House.She said: “I think it’s important to understand that we have just arrived at the close of the 2011 to 2012 Parliamentary year, and to some of us it has been a tough slog in terms of the legislation we have been required to approve, discuss, and agree and disagree.”The Shadow Transport Minister added: “We have had some situations in which differing philosophies have been expressed by both sides of the aisle, and sometimes it has been expressed rancorously.”Saying it was the Opposition’s responsibility to “challenge those things that could have been done different or better”, Ms Gordon-Pamplin said: “As summer is upon us, I believe it’s important that we leave here today knowing each and every one of us has done our level best in our deliberations.”She wished her colleagues “a safe and happy Cup Match”.The Parliamentary year concluded last night, with the House of Assembly adjourned until Friday, November 2.
