Financial Assistance Dept could pay senior’s return flight to Jamaica Minister
A senior left broke in Bermuda after returning from Jamaica is entitled to money for a ticket back home, according to Families Minister Glenn Blakeney.Dual national Jacqueline Perinchief, 66, told The Royal Gazette her return to the Island — where costs were high and a job impossible to get — had been “the worst mistake of her life”.Ms Perinchief has been supported by Financial Assistance ever since March, 2010, covering rent, food, medical insurance and transport. She had most recently left Bermuda in 1984, and as a result of living overseas for so long, does not qualify for a full pension. However, Mr Blakeney said that Financial Assistance continued to help Ms Perinchief despite repeated evictions from housing.“Ms Perinchief contacted the National Office for Seniors and Physically Challenged and was last placed and currently resides in a rest home,” he continued. “The cost of rental accommodations have ranged from $550 monthly to $1,500 monthly to currently $4,000 monthly — so, where she is staying is not free.“In view of the fact that she is residing at a rest home all of her meals are included and therefore her DFA non-cash food card was discontinued. All of her basic needs are being met.”The Minister added that cash allowances had been cut off, but said the client had persistently used the money for unauthorised items. He added: “If she really wants to return to Jamaica, DFA would assist her to repatriate to Jamaica, as the cost of one way air passage is not prohibitive in comparison to the monthly costs currently incurred.”Ms Perinchief is being housed for now in Southampton’s Herb Garden Seniors Residence.
